The Alamo House, c. 1929
299 Stewart Avenue
This neo-Spanish style house, lovingly referred to as the Alamo House by the citizens of Marietta, was built in 1929. The earliest known owner of the property was Joseph Mackey Brown, Governor of Georgia, 1909-1913. He sold it to Dr. T.S. Stewart, a Civil War physician in 1890. Stewart Avenue is named for him. J.H. Hulsey, a brick mason and farmer, purchased the property and built the house in 1929. The house was thought to have been modeled on a kit home and the front façade resembles the Alamo – hence the name. The bricks were manufactured by Canton Brick Company. The Hulsey family lived in the house for 55 years. Later owners include Mrs. Nola Marshall (1952) and Homer Brock Fortson (1956). The Fortson family lived in the house for 41 years.
A major addition (1500 square feet) to the house was completed in 2005 by the current owners, Susan and Jim Mathis, who acquired the house in 2002. They took great care to have the addition blend with the original part, even dyeing 80% of the new bricks to match the old bricks. The house has been the site for two weddings – Nita & Dan Burge in 1997 (owners of the house 1997-2002) and the current owners, Jim & Susan Mathis in 2002.
