The Marietta First Baptist church was organized in 1835 with only seventeen charter members. The Church had a very large slave membership before the Civil War. The First Baptist Church met in several locations until governor Joseph Brown donated the land where the present chapel now stands. This structure was built in 1892 and was dedicated in 1897. This Roman and Gothic style building was built of Georgia marble and granite and was used as the main sanctuary until the new structure was built alongside the old in 1962.
