The Anderson Mansion, c. 1900

65 Whitlock Avenue

Photo This Colonial Revival style house was built on the site of the Whitlock House, a 104-room resort owned by Milledge & Anna Whitlock. The resort was once the center of social life in Marietta until it burned in 1889. After that, Dallas Road was renamed Whitlock Avenue to honor Mr. Whitlock. James T. Anderson, Sr. acquired the property and construction on the house began in 1900. He was considered the richest man in Cobb County. He commissioned James W. Golucke to design the house incorporating the finest in neo-classical design. Mr. Golucke specialized in designing courthouses throughout Georgia and had completed the remodel of the Cobb County Courthouse on the Square. The Anderson family moved in March 1901. During WWII, noted architect and native son, William Montgomery Anderson remodeled the house. In 1950, Madison (Mack) & Elleen Fowler purchased the house. It was sold in 2001 to Brian and Linda Davidson. The property was purchased by Nancy & Sandy Edwards. Today is serves as the headquarters for Cobb Landmarks & Historical Society.
